It is terribly difficult to attract talent these days without offering hugely extravagant paychecks and vanity perks. Often companies find themselves in a soup with crushed balance sheets and corrective actions lead to pain.

While it is always a good practice to pay your employees well, it may not always be a good idea to dole out extravagant paychecks to a select few if it means cutting short your company's runway. Below are 6 things you can do to attract and retain top talent in the long term without depleting your treasure chest.

Tip #1 - Focus On The Company Culture.

Create a culture that welcomes ideas however crazy they may sound at first. And then emphasize to everyone that you are onboarding new hires into this culture and not into mere job roles.

Be clear about your mission and about the company culture. Onboard by describing "a movie scene" of how the future might look like while working together. Describe in detail what a functional organization looks like.

Be empathetic and listen carefully to how your team believes their work aligns with their goals in life and how they want to grow and contribute to your company's culture.

And remember, if you can create a deep culture bank, you can draw from it during crises.

Tip #2 - Focus On The Tribe.

Give your workforce the sense of belonging to a Tribe. Everyone longs for a sense of belonging.

But how can you achieve this? Well, you need to do two things:

  • Schedule activities that you can do together as a team. For example, there could be a Ski Weekend or a Friday Bowling Party With Pizza or even a Sunday Rugby Game.

  • Brainstorm regularly with all your teams and evaluate carefully each one's inputs.

Brainstorming gives everyone the opportunity to make themselves heard. Remember that for humans, the instinct to express and feel heard is basic and necessary. In fact, the endorphins released when someone looks you in the eye and hears you deeply, is similar to that of eating a piece of chocolate.

Remember that you cannot have a Tribe, if you do not do things together. Even sitting around a campfire together can evoke feelings of belongingness.

Tip #3 - Focus On The Vision.

Be clear about your vision and your roadmap. Describe how the future might look if you are successful in achieving your goals.

Communicate to your workers their true purpose and meaning by telling them why the work they are doing is important in the bigger picture.

Tip #4 -Be Clear In Your Communication.

Be super clear in your briefs. While you can use a physical whiteboard to brainstorm each other's thoughts, you can also use a digital whiteboard, such as what our software product, The Toot App offers, in remote or hybrid work environments. Because the Toot App's whiteboard is so easy to use, it offers the same kind of spontaneity you get working with physical whiteboards. Once you are done with the brainstorming, you can use the Toot App's WorkTable to list out the action steps you need to take.

Remember the often repeated adage, "Garbage In Is Garbage Out". A half clear brief will will always give you only a half clear result. To make sure you are clear in your own understanding, use a whiteboard to clarify your thoughts.

Ask yourself.

  1. How do I know I clearly understand what my team needs?

  2. How do I communicate succinctly to someone what we really need as a team?

Tip #5 - Focus On How The Parts Fit Into The Whole.

Remember that almost everyone in your team is only able to see a tiny portion of your business. Your main job as a manager is to communicate clearly to your team how everything fits together in the whole scheme of things. And this is where you as a leader can make the most difference, since no one probably understands the whole business better than you.

"How do you build a cohesive team creating a path to something out on the horizon that excites? Clear about where they are going. Clear about why they cannot stay where they are today. Clear about how you are going to lead them there." - an anonymous CEO.

Tip #6 - Focus on Empowerment.

Empower your employees and take their inputs and feedbacks. Employees want to be heard. They want to have input. Think of ways to let them know they are in a safe and retaliation-free environment so that they can speak out.

Allow them to make decisions if they are closer to the task and have thought about it more than you. Your main goal is to train them so that they can work efficiently without the need of supervision.

Remember that a great leader is able to bring out the best in others, so that in his presence everyone become stronger and better versions of themselves. A true leader instills confidence in others. And confidence is infectious and spreads through the ranks.
