How do you build a Rock Star team and also stay profitable? - 5 minute read.

The Great Resignation has been eating the souls of many companies since 2021. Not only is it incredibly hard for companies to out compete each other and hire the best talent, it is even harder to retain that talent. As a manager in 2022, if you do not find ways to keep your team 100% motivated, another company will probably nibble at pieces of your team and woo them away with money offers. But what is their offer usually? A big paycheck with perks like free food in the office, subscriptions to fitness clubs and/or villa? Can you beat these offers so that your team does not drop the ball on your mission and leave you? Is there something the workforce craves for in their hearts which you can offer to them, that they find irresistibly attractive, and which will want them to keep working for you forever.
Most companies, especially the ones in the Silicon Valley, try to attract talent by offering HUGE money and vanity perks. They Appeal To People's Vanity. But do their workers really feel happy working for them? Salaries do not always correlate with job satisfaction. We knew this before the pandemic, and we are surer than ever of this post-pandemic. Numerous surveys have shown that employees do not want only good paychecks. What they are really looking for in a job is a sense of purpose or meaning in life, since it makes them feel good about themselves in a way that even good money does not. And the better the performer, the more important self-esteem is to him.
While it is always a good practice to pay your employees well, fortunately, you do not have to break the bank when trying to motivate them. Below are 3 things you can do to attract and retain top talent in the long term without having to burn through all your cash, while at the same time emphasize your uniqueness to the world.
Tip #1 - Onboard your new recruits into a culture.
Embrace your recruits into a welcoming culture and not just into a job role. Be empathetic and listen carefully to how they believe their work aligns with their goals in life and how they want to grow. Be clear about your mission and about the company culture. Describe to them the purpose and meaning of their work vis-a-vis the big picture. Onboarding by describing "a movie scene" of how the future might look like while working together. Describe in detail what a highly functional organization looks like.
Create a culture bank to draw from during crises. One where you and everyone in your team support each other. The tools to motivate and bond are there. If you want you can take a look at our product, The Toot App. But what you need to do is figure out how to mesh them within your corporation.

Tip #2 - The Vision.
Be clear about your vision and about your roadmap towards attaining it. Describe to them the purpose and meaning of their work vis-a-vis the big picture. Describe how the future might look if you are successful in achieving your goals.
Communicate to your workers purpose and meaning by telling them why the work they are doing is important in the bigger picture.
Give people the sense of belonging. Everyone longs for it. Give them a feeling of Tribe. They must feel that they belong to a tribe.
Be super clear in your briefs. You can use a physical whiteboard to brainstorm each other's thoughts. Or you can use a digital whiteboard, such as what The Toot App offers, to help you in remote or hybrid work environments. You can use the Toot App's WorkTable to list out action steps.
Remember the often repeated adage, "Garbage In Garbage Out". A half clear brief will gives you a half clear result. Therefore to make sure you are clear in your own understanding, use a whiteboard to clarify your thoughts. Ask yourself.
1. How do I know I clearly understand what my team needs?
2. How do I communicate succinctly to anyone what we really need as a team?

Remember that almost everyone in your team is only able to see a tiny portion of the business. Your main job as a manager is to communicate clearly how everything fits together in the whole scheme. And this is where you as a leader can make the most difference.
"Culture develops through consistent messaging. Internal and external, verbal and non-verbal."
Tip #3 - Empower Them.
Empower your employees and take their inputs and feedbacks. Employees want to be heard. They want to have input. Think about how you can let them know they are in a safe and retaliation-free environment.
Allow them to make decisions if they are closer to the task and have thought about it more than you. Your main goal is to train them so that they can work efficiently without the need of supervision.
Dont be the author of every piece of output in your business. Instead try to be the editor.
There is always a temptation to do everything yourself, but you have to say, "No, I am not the author. This person is the author. I just need to look at the work, trim the fat, make sure all the pieces fit together in the big picture and that everything that gets done will bring us closer to a good result."

A Good Team Will Build Your Vision For You.
A Rock Star Team Will Chase You to Accomplish Your Vision For You.
If you hire the right person and paint the right picture, they can work pretty well autonomously. You will only need to do just-in-time feedback as you go. Ultimately, the most efficient teams are the ones who chase you around in order to fulfill your vision instead of the other other way around.
